                           DOG DAY AT WAR

                  NACVRW02 HARPOON EDITED SCENARIO

                          BY BASHI BAZOUK

It's the last week in February and the war has been grinding
down for the past ten days or so. The intense fighting of the
first five weeks took a heavy toll on equipment and people. Most
weapon systems received their first true test in battle. Many
proved useful but where quickly expended, others couldn't withstand
battle conditions. Either they failed due to the harsh battlefield
environment; or couldn't function in the full array of
electromagnetic pulses generated by the numerous modern weaponry
developed since WWII.

This has caused both sides to become very cautious; slowing the
fighting to small moments of intense exchanges, give and taking
here and there. The side which can break this stalemate with a
innovative weapon or strategy can again take the initiative. By
chance both sides have put into action a plan which each thinks
will break the war open to victory causing them to meet in the "Dog Days of
War".

The Allies have finished developing a highly classified
weapon in the Canadian city of Moosonee on the Missinaibi river of
Ontario which needs to be delivered to Iceland. Meanwhile the
Russians have sent a killer group of SSNs and SSGNs under the
Arctic icepack passing through Lincoln Sea into Baffin Bay and
Davis Straight; effectively bypassing the GIUK. They are ordered to
work their way to the North Atlantic convoy routes and kill anything
afloat used to supply the Imperialist war machine and cutting off their
only way to sustain the war. A back door play.

LTCM Paul Teehan USNR sits contemplating his luck as the FFG
Elrod steams in formation as part of a squadron. Ever since he was
called up for active duty as the attrition of the war slimmed the
available officer ranks. Paul had this gut wrenching feeling that
the war was going to get very personal. When the orders came for
the FFG De Wert to pick up the merchant freighter SS Lucky Penney
from Moosonee. He knew the time had come. The squadron was to hook
up with them off Resolution Island at the mouth of the Hudson Straight
in about a week.

In the meantime the squadron was to patrol the area between
Newfoundland and Greenland. It was boring and slow with the

icebergs and ice floes in the area. The classified orders received
which Paul had reviewed said that the freighter was not to exceed 7
knots until position (ZZZ) Lat 57deg 50min N - Lan 39deg 41min W.
This was to insure the safety and integrity of the cargo. At ZZZ
cruise speed (18kt) was to be maintained until delivery in Iceland.
Some air coverage was possible at times with a few air ASW patrols
to help out in flushing any Red subs. A 20% chance of the Seawolf
meeting at position ZZZ. Other units may also join the squadron at
this time if they where available. Paul just thought that this
cruising and waiting is just the Dog Days waiting to return home.

Well you have the SITREP. Its basic and simple. The Reds
kill the merchant and anything getting in their way of doing it.
The Blues just sit out the Dog Days of the War and deliver the
merchant to Iceland. Good Luck!!
